Some people dream about traveling around the world, visiting places to which they have never been and meeting people from all walks of life. I have never been too keen about hopping on an airplane and flying to faraway places – I am much more of a “home body” and enjoy a fair amount of solitude. I was fortunate to spend a couple of weeks in France, Germany and Switzerland during the summer of 2009, where I took a lot of photos using the “auto” setting on my Nikon Coolpix P90 camera. I recently upgraded to a Nikon D-SLR and am looking forward to experimenting this summer to see if I can improve my photographic technique and vision.
One of the biggest challenges I am facing is that I have spent many years developing my ability to use words and text to make sense of the world. I have been teaching in the higher education environment for more than 20 years, yet have only recently discovered the power of using images to enhance learning and understanding. So right now I am determined to learn how to think and communicate more effectively through a combination of words and images. I am not exactly sure where this journey will take me, however I am looking forward to the challenge.
I intend to use this website and blog to document and reflect on my journey to become more adept at visual thinking and enhance my visual literacy. If you are interested in witnessing my progress, please come back again soon.
